Job Purpose:
To manage and lead the visual arts and design fabrication technical team to provide high quality technical expertise to students, staff and external partners supporting them in learning, teaching, research and income generation activities. To ensure the safe maintenance and operation of teaching and research spaces and associated facilities in accordance with current Health & Safety regulations and legal requirements. With support from the Director of Learning & Teaching efficiently manage allocated budgets and resources.

Main Duties:

* To lead and manage a team of technical staff, providing training and up-skilling where required.
* To provide the highest quality, multi-specialist technical expertise and support for teaching, research, events, income generation and outreach during and outside of standard term times; undertake demonstrations for practical classes and skill training when required.
* To manage ongoing programme of inspections, testing, maintenance and repair of equipment workshops, studios and associated areas to ensure health, safety and security requirements and regulations are met.
* To ensure allocated budgets and resources are managed effectively and with due regard to policies, regulations and good practice.
* To adopt a collaborative, collegiate and inclusive culture which includes sharing information and good practice with others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Line Management

* Recruit, induct and manage staff to ensure they are supported and able carry out their roles effectively.
* Plan workloads to ensure all workshop/lab/store areas are covered as required.

Technical Support

* The post holder will routinely address staff and student groups with information of a specialist nature. This will involve timetabled practical sessions as well as supporting other access to specialist facilities.
* Preparation, setting up and clearing of equipment and materials as required.
* The role holder would provide technical support for events and school and college liaison activities.
* Support academic staff in the supervision of students within the workshops and studios and demonstrating the safe use of equipment and specialised laboratory skills to students and staff.
* Collaborate with academic and technical colleagues in the development of inductions, research projects, research and other academic programme, and to contribute ideas towards the improvement of the resultant services to users. Introducing innovative techniques into areas of research and academic delivery.
* Production and development of learning materials, for use by students and staff in practical settings, in line with specified academic outcomes including preparation of standard operating procedures.
* To liaise with Departmental heads on a regular basis to ensure the needs of students and staff are met.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Essential criteria

* Demonstrable experience of working in a workshop / studio / laboratory environment and management or supervision of staff working in that environment
* Evidence of experience and practical knowledge of a wide range of specialist, practical techniques and equipment relating to the areas of; visual arts, digital & design fabrication and engineering, with a commitment to CPD and Professional Registration (A/I).
* Knowledge of health and safety at work practices and its implementation in a workshop / studio / laboratory environment (A/I/T).
* Experience of purchasing and record keeping using appropriate computer software and system (A/I).
