Job Description:

An experienced System Administrator is required to join a large, prestigious organisation based in Newcastle City Centre. The role is full time, Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5:00pm and the hourly rate for the position is £13.50 PAYE . The position is temporary starting 1st May and on-going initially until 2nd October although this may be extended depending upon work load. The job role includes:

1. Responsibility for one or more major areas of core IT infrastructure (see examples below). The duties will include contributing to initial needs analysis and specification, system implementation and configuration, administration, backup, customer support/advice and documentation. The role will include working as part of a team and consultation with other colleagues within the IT Service and customers.
Examples
• Enterprise scale email/groupware systems (Sendmail/Exchange respectively) providing e-mail, diary, meeting contacts and task management for all University staff and students.
• Enterprise scale data storage systems to provide all University staff and students with a highly available and secure data storage system for both personal and institutional data.
• Communication systems providing secure access to internal/external resources on the University’s network and the wider internet. For example application layer firewalls such as WebDAV/Filr for secure file access, MS VPN for network connectivity, socks and squid for external network access.
• An account management system containing details of user accounts for all staff and students. This system is used to control access to all IT Service services e.g. Linux and Windows logins, e-mail and telecoms.
• Administration up to the database level of the management information, data-flows/exports/manipulation and related services that are central to operation of the University-wide and more local administrative/teaching/research facilities.
• Middleware applications for institutional and inter-institutional user authentication and authorisation for access services, both within and outside the University.
• Provide advice and practical assistance to others (both within and outside the University) on technical and architectural issues relating to systems integration and systems architecture. E.g. provision of data to applications; integrating “single sign on” into applications; techniques for embedding scalable access control into applications.
• Configuration and administration of central servers supporting the automated installation, configuration and deployment of client/server operating systems, device drivers and application software for all Managed Desktops/Servers (approx 12,000 PCs/800 Servers across the University).
• Provision of resilient infrastructure to underpin services managed by other teams in the IT Service e.g. virtual servers, file-store, database servers and web servers including equipment and service selection, purchasing, provisioning and maintenance.
• Provide systems administration support for University High Performance Computing (HPC) services ensuring that they meet the needs of users.

The successful candidate:
• Graduate or have an equivalent professional qualification, and to have substantial practical technical knowledge relevant to their duties;
• In the case that professional qualifications for any relevant technical area exist, possess these or equivalent knowledge.
• The post-holder will be expected to maintain and develop their knowledge by independent reading/research/investigations and through formal training programmes and qualification as and when required.
• A practical understanding of TCP/IP (v4) networking and related protocols (e.g. DNS, DHCP, etc).
• A practical understanding of security issues in a multi-OS environment.
• Excellent team working skills;
• Able to work on own initiative, prioritise work and meet deadlines;
• Commitment to providing high quality, highly available services;
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers at all levels of the University to provide 3rd line support and consultation on requirements;
• A robust approach to planning, developing, testing, documenting and implementing IT systems
