Position Overview

The Director – Mechanical will be accountable for completing a range of activities undertaken by our client and its Mechanical Services Team. The Director – Mechanical will lead the Mechanical Function in mechanical design, project management, co-ordination and supervision.  

The Role

  • Act as the business Focal Point (FP) for developing and implementing the mechanical services growth strategy.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the value drivers of the business, including the core business objectives, so as to be able to identify profitable commercial opportunities to grow revenue and market share.
  • Be able to maintain an excellent understanding of the business’ mechanical services provision and ensure that the mechanical function provides a gold standard service to the rest of the business, its clients and customers.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director to manage key customers (existing and new), thereby improving turnover and profitability.
  • Ensure continued review of the business’ mechanical products, services and capabilities to ensure relevance and commercial / financial viability.
  • Work with the commercial function to embed each new product or service development, from innovation through to successful implementation.
  • Ensure all risks and opportunities pertaining to the mechanical function are recorded regularly as part of the risk management strategy.
  • Ensure proper assessment of mechanical services risk to the business, ensuring all company personnel and stakeholders are informed.
  • Be accountable for ensuring that regular reviews are carried out with key clients and customers, to ensure that their needs are being met and that excellent customer service is achieved. As part of the review process, ensure that regular customer and client feedback are recorded and submitted as evidence for ISO 9001:2015 compliance.
  • Represent the company externally e.g. at networking events, conferences and exhibitions to enhance and strengthen the company’s profile and optimise all business development opportunities.
  • Maintain an awareness of external factors (including: competitors, construction developments, government business initiatives, current and proposed legislation in relation to mechanical activities) which impact the business. Communicate such information and any subsequent changes to the Managing Director (MD) and Senior Management Team (SMT).
  • Ensure ongoing communication with all major stakeholders (internal and external) to maintain and develop the Corporate Risk Register. 
  • Collate and regularly analyse functional performance data pertaining to all mechanical activities.
  • Ensure that all mechanical activities meet or improve on budget, cost, volume and efficiency targets (Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)) in line with business objectives.
  • Ensure a good working relationship and regular communications with all members of the SMT.
  • Be responsible for the overall management of all mechanical staff.
  • Ensure all mechanical staff are properly trained, experienced and mentored, as is relevant to their position in the business.

  • Observe and develop the Business’ Management System, Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure own and team’s compliance with company Policies and Procedures.
  • Regularly review standard operating procedures and practices to ensure relevance.
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of: MVHR/HVAC and ventilation, public health and drainage, UFH systems, renewable energy, domestic plumbing and gas, commercial plumbing and gas, various types of heating systems, air conditioning, service pipework installations and hot water storage.
  • Be able to manage all financial elements of the mechanical function.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Have at least 5 years of experience as a Mechanical Fitter and Supervisor.
  • Hold an HNC / HND / Degree – Mechanical Engineering
  • In the absence of a HNC / HNC / Degree, be able to demonstrate acute knowledge and experience of Mechanical Services Management gained through an NVQ process.
  • Tertiary qualification in General Management.
  • Professional registration (s): CEng / MCIOB / CMgr MCMI
  • Be able to demonstrate Continued Professional Development (CPD).
